Hidden for more than 10,000 years, the Inner Space Cavern was discovered by the Texas Highway Department core drilling team, in the spring of 1963. While digging through 40 feet of solid limestone, the drill bit suddenly broke through into space, and dropped 26 feet, into what is now known as the Inner Space Cavern. Lowered through the opening while standing on a drill bit,a brave highway department employee was the first person ever enter the cavern!
